No. 25 Notre Dame completes sweep of Syracuse with 12-0 mercy-rule win

No. 25 Notre Dame (37-11, 16-5 Atlantic Coast) completed a sweep of Syracuse (17-25, 1-13) in South Bend, Indiana with a 12-0 mercy-rule win on Sunday. The Orange has now dropped seven consecutive conference games.

SU prevented the potential first run of the game when a relay threw out a runner at home in the top of the first. Starting pitcher Jocelyn Cater then found trouble again by walking two batters. She escaped the inning untouched, though, when Maddi Doane ran down a fly ball in right for the third out.

The second inning didn’t goes as well for Cater, who allowed five runs. She left after 1.2 innings and, in total, surrendered five hits, four walks and threw 26 of 52 pitches for strikes.

AnnaMarie Gatti relieved Cater in the bottom of the second, but a double allowed another run to score, though it was credited to Cater. Gatti threw two-thirds of an inning and faced eight batters. She yielded five hits, walked a batter and gave up five runs.

The Orange offense was stifled by Notre Dame hurler Allie Rhodes, who tossed five innings of shutout ball while picking up her 16th win on the season. She struck out seven, gave up four hits and walked none.

Corinne Ozanne went 2-for-2 on the day with a pair of singles for Syracuse.

The only time the Syracuse offense threatened to score came in the top of the third inning when freshman Sammy Fernandez hit a one-out triple, the first three-bagger of her career. Rhodes struck out the next batter and got a fly out to right to strand Fernandez.

Sydney O’Hara came in for the final 1.2 innings for Syracuse and allowed two runs on three hits.

The Orange travels to Hempstead, New York on Wednesday to play Hofstra.
