Fire in basement forces students out of Flint Hall

A small fire broke out in the basement mechanical room of Flint Hall at about 11:50 p.m. Wednesday, said Capt. Townsend of the Syracuse Fire Department.

Engine Five put out the fire and ventailated the room, he said.

Flint residents were moved into the lounges of Day Hall. Michelle Goldberg, a freshmen retail management major, said students waited outside for approximately five minutes before being told they could go into the Day lounge. Initally students had problems entering Day because it was after 8 p.m. and Department of Public Safety officials were checking resident identification, she added. Many students had left their identification in their rooms.

Whitney Osborne, a sophomore design major, said when the fire alarm when off she went downstairs and saw smoke up to the ceiling in the game room. David Ritter, a freshman advertising and marketing major, said he thought it may be just a drill but then smelled smoke once on the ground floor. Alex Wilson, a freshman marketing and broadcast journalism, said the Syracuse Fire Department arrived very soon after the alarm went off.

“I’m glad they take it seriously,” Wilson said. “It shows that they care but it’s really inconvenient.”

Flint residents returned to their rooms at approximately 1 a.m. today. Many students expressed anger about having to stay in Day. Several students voiced displeasure about homework they should have been doing.

“You want to know what sucks worst is having ADD right now, a fire, and knowing that I still have to do homework,” said Miya Teraki, a sophomore industrial design major.

“I think it sucks,” said Jennifer Hanscom, a freshman fashion design major.
