Petrulevich takes 1st in 800 at Rice

Valerij Petrulevich picked up one victory at the Rice Bayou Invitational and barely missed out on another by hundredths of a second.

Petrulevich won the 800-meter run in 1:50.23 and just missed victory in the 1,500-meter run. He finished in 3:55.00, falling to Texas State’s James Ortiz, who won in 3:54.88. The Syracuse men’s track and field team finished in ninth place, while the women took eighth.

Sophomore Sheron Mark finished second in the triple jump for the women and freshman Kathleen Sanborn finished third in the 1,500-meter run.

Next weekend, the Orange heads to Princeton for the Sam Howell Invitational.

Women’s rowing



The No. 18 Orange hoped for an upset over No. 2 Yale this weekend in Derby, Conn. SU nearly pulled off the upset, finishing just four seconds behind the Bulldogs’ varsity eight.

The Orange finished 12 seconds ahead of Cornell. Syracuse finished third in the second varsity eight, varsity four, novice eight and novice four.

SU travels to Boston next weekend to row against Pennsylvania and Northeastern.
