SU junior dies while studying abroad

Syracuse University junior Matt Wanetik died Friday morning at the home of his host family in Strasbourg, France, according to an e-mail sent Friday afternoon by Thomas Wolfe, interim senior vice president and dean of student affairs.

Wanetik, a political science and international relations major and member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity, was studying in France through the SU Abroad Strasbourg Center.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, according to the e-mail.

Chancellor Nancy Cantor is currently in Strasbourg for an education conference and was notified of the death by SU Abroad Executive Director Jon Booth at approximately 3 p.m. Strasbourg time, said Kevin Quinn, SU vice president for public affairs.

Quinn and Cantor spent time Friday at the Strasbourg center with other students who had gathered to talk about Wanetik’s life and how they were coping with the loss, Quinn said.

An informal service was held Friday afternoon in Hendricks Chapel and memorial service plans are forthcoming, according to the e-mail.
