Notre Dame ended the Syracuse women’s soccer team’s season on Sunday, defeating the Orange 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Big East tournament.

The Orange finishes the season with an overall record of 9-7-2 and a Big East record of 6-3-1, its first winning season since 2003.

The game was even for the first 45 minutes, with the Fighting Irish outshooting the Orange 7-5 in the first half. But the second half was a different story as SU only had seven shots to the Irish’s 17.

In the 78th minute, Notre Dame’s Cari Roccaro came away with a loose ball to dribble and score easily. The Irish held on from there to end the Orange’s season.

Volleyball

Syracuse (10-16, 2-9 Big East) ended a six-game losing streak last weekend. After the Orange lost to Villanova in four sets on Saturday, it rebounded to defeat Georgetown on Sunday.

SU won the first set 25-18 over the Wildcats. The Orange didn’t hold a lead in the second set as Villanova started on a 4-0 run and won 25-21. SU then dropped the final two sets for its sixth straight loss.

Nicolette Serratore had 15 digs, 17 kills and two blocks for SU. Monika Salkute had six blocks, and Melina Violas and Gosia Wlaszczuk both had 12 digs.

Syracuse was able to secure a conference road win in its last Big East road game of the season, defeating Georgetown in five sets.

The teams traded wins in the first four sets, setting up a decisive fifth set. Georgetown committed seven errors in the last set, and the Orange kept the Hoyas at a negative-.062 hitting clip, leading Syracuse to a 15-8 win and ultimately the match win.

The Orange will finish its season at home against St. John’s on Friday at 2 p.m. in the Women’s Building.

Ice hockey

Syracuse split a pair of games against Connecticut last weekend.

After losing 4-2 on Friday, the Orange turned around and won 2-0 on Saturday. The win brought the team’s record to an even 4-4 (2-0 College Hockey America.)

After going down 2-0 early on Friday, SU defender Jacquie Greco and forward Shiann Darkangelo scored back-to-back goals in the second period.

The Huskies then took the lead again halfway through the third period and added an empty-net goal as the game winded down. SU managed to outshoot Connecticut 40-23 in the loss.

Goaltender Kallie Billadeau led the team to a 2-0 win on Saturday afternoon. The shutout was Billadeau’s third of the season.

Defender Akane Hosoyamada led the team with a goal and assist. Darkangelo scored in her third straight game and is now tied for the team lead with five goals. Syracuse outshot the Huskies 36-13 and has now outshot its opponent in seven of its eight games.

At the end of the first period, the Orange scored on its third power play opportunity of the game. Less than two minutes into the second period, Hosoyamada scored her first goal of the season.

SU now travels to Union for a two-game series starting Friday.

Cross country

The Syracuse cross country team competed in its final Big East championship on Friday and the men’s team left with the title.

It was the men’s third championship in four years. The women’s team finished sixth.

Freshman Martin Hehir placed first overall, earning the individual Big East championship with a time of 24:37.20.

Sarah Pagano placed ninth with a time of 21:10.42. Pagano was named All-Big East for the third year in a row.

The men’s team also broke a record as a program-high six runners named All-Big East. Joe Whelan, Ryan Urie, Reed Kayzsek and Hehir all finished in the top 10.

The Orange next competes in the NCAA Northeast Regional on Nov. 9 in Madison, Conn.
