Syracuse runners come out successful at Valentine, Army Invitationals

The Syracuse track and field team finished competition this weekend in Boston for the Boston University Valentine Invitational, and in New York for the Armory Collegiate Invitational.

In a successful weekend, four SU runners were able to set new school-records in the two meets.

Junior distance runner Martin Hehir, who broke the school-record for the 3,000-meter run last week, set a new school record in the mile-run with a time of 4:00.04.

Senior sprinter Molly Malone set a new time in the 800-meter run, clocking in at 2:07.11. Junior sprinter Bria Goodson came in second place in the 200-meter dash, besting the previous record with a time of 24.15.

And sophomore sprinter Rebecca Robinson broke the school record, while taking third place, in the 400-meter dash, running a 54.64.



A total of 17 Orange runners set new personal records over the weekend. Hehir, Malone, Goodson and Robinson’s times were all personal records as well as school records.

Senior sprints and hurdles runner Donald Politt was able to take the Orange’s lone victory, running a new personal best of 7.75 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Sophomore Shaina Harrison shaved her previous time by .01 seconds, running a 7.41.

In addition to Hehir, freshman Joel Hubbard, sophomore MJ Erb and redshirt senior Robert Molke all set new personal bests in the mile run. Hubbard ran a 4:04.38, Erb a 4:04.66 and Molke a 4:06.39.

Senior middle-distance runner Michelle Riley set a new personal record time of 2:13.88 in the 800-meter run.

Five SU runners ran a new personal best in the 3,000-meter run.

Sophomore distance runner Margo Malone ran a 9:29.35 in the women’s run.

Senior distance runner Max Straneva [8:05.86], junior Juris Silenieks [8:24.12], junior Joseph Kush [8:21.75] and senior David Wilson [8:26.14] all beat their previous times as well in the men’s competition.

And senior distance runner Reed Kamyszek bested his old personal record in the 5,000-meter run finishing with a 14:09.79.

SU will travel to the Iowa State Classic this upcoming weekend, and will compete on Feb. 14 and 15.
