Week in Pulp: Filming in Syracuse, “glamping”

1. Wacheva Cultural Arts

Biboti Ouikahilo brought a blend of cultures to Setnor Auditorium this week when he and his dance studio performed for a music history class. Ouikahilo is the founder and director of Wacheva Cultural Arts, a dance studio in the Westcott neighborhood. He’s traveled around the world with the renowned Ivory Coast National Dance Company, but chose to settle in Syracuse because he liked the quietness and inclusivity. Now, Ouikahilo teaches the dances he’s learned in his travels to the Syracusans who come to his studio.

 



2. “Glamping”

 

Humor columnist Evan Hohenwarter got the scoop on the last addition to the Park Point apartments: glamping. Yes, for extra money you can reserve a luxury camping package for next year, so when you camp out for an actual apartment you can still be in style and comfortable. Although it may seem hard to believe (that’s because it’s fake), Park Point is about to become even more costly and extravagant.

 

3. FYP

First Year Players, the performance club that casts only freshman, non-drama majors, announced this week via Twitter that their spring show will be “Heathers: The Musical.” “Heathers” is about Veronica Sawyer, a girl who fights her way to the top of the high school food-chain and gets knocked back down. The way she stands back up, though, is what has made the movie version a cult classic. FYP’s shows are always popular, too, so make sure you get your tickets as soon as they’re available.

 

4. Drake fumbles feminist message

Despite Drake’s talk of wanting to be more respectful of women, music columnist Isha Damle believes his lyrics tell a different story. She said that he’s acknowledged the crass and objectifying language that most rappers use towards women, but songs as recent as “Hotline Bling” show that he isn’t listening to his own message. In the song, he makes it sound like his ex’s behavior is inappropriate, which Damle said is not his business. And as Damle said, “awareness is ineffective if he isn’t going to change his behavior.”

 

5. “American Dresser”

“American Dresser” wrapped up filming this week in the Syracuse area. The film depicts a motorcycle rider who travels across the country after his wife dies to find a son from a previous relationship. It was the first film shot in the new Central New York Hub for Emerging Nano Industries, where the producers moved their headquarters to take advantage of upstate New York tax credits. The producers say they are looking forward to filming more movies in the Hub, so more stars may be making their way to Syracuse.
