Syracuse men’s and women’s track and field places 9th and 11th, respectively, at ACC outdoor championship

After a dominating performance at the Atlantic Coast Conference indoor championships, Syracuse posted underwhelming results at the ACC outdoor championship at Florida State this weekend. The Orange’s men’s team finished in ninth with 48 points while the women’s team finished 11th with 33 points.

SU’s men’s team scored expected points in its distance events and the 110-meter hurdles, but the Orange lacked depth across events. Justyn Knight placed third in the 10,000 meters (29:46.41), seconds behind Thomas Curtin of Virginia Tech and Luis Vargas of North Carolina State. Teammate Philo Germano finished sixth (30:08.14) to add three points for Syracuse.

Adam Palamar and Joel Hubbard found success in the 1,500 meter with third and fourth place finishes in 3:45.82 and 3:46.14, respectively. Colin Bennie recorded a fifth-place performance in the 5,000 meters with a 13:56.57. Philo Germano just missed doubling up with points in the 5k and 10k, but finished with a 10th place finish in the 5k, narrowly missing the podium.

SU found its greatest success in the 110 hurdles, led by a dominant performance by Freddie Crittenden. The junior cruised to victory with a time of 13.58 seconds, defeating the rest of the field by 0.25 seconds. Freshman Richard Floyd provided a promising race, finishing fourth in 14.05 seconds as David Gilstrap earned fifth in 14.17 seconds. Winston Lee (10.47) was the lone scorer in the dashes as he finished seventh in the 100-meter dash.

The women’s team found nearly all of its success in the distance events. In the 10,000 meters, school record-holder Margo Malone finished second in 34:38.18. Shaylyn Tuite and Shannon Malone finished fifth and sixth respectively in 35:09.12 and 35:39.48. The trio earned 15 of SU’s 33 points. Margo Malone then followed up the 10k with a third-place performance in the 5,000 meters in time of 16:34.14. Shaina Harrison was the sole other individual scorer for the Orange, earning second place in the 100m dash in 11.72 seconds.

Head coach Chris Fox was able to send athletes onward to the NCAA outdoor championship, June 8 in Eugene, Oregon, but ninth and 11th place finishes at the ACC outdoor championship do not bode well for the Orange.
