SU construction update: promenade to be finished before student move-in; accessibility improvements underway

Rachel Gilbert | Feature Editor

Work on the University Place promenade continues as part of the more than 120 campus construction projects Syracuse University has planned to complete this summer.

The University Place promenade remains on track and hardscape work is expected to be complete before Syracuse University students move in at the end of August, said Pete Sala, vice president and chief campus facilities officer, in Monday’s summer construction update.

In the email sent to the SU community, Sala said construction on the promenade is continuing to go well. Work on the promenade has transitioned into plinth foundation concrete work and drainage installation.

The University Place promenade is a part of the Campus Framework. The university released a 42-page draft of the Campus Framework last week, detailing plans for the physical SU campus over the next 20 years.

In the Quad 2 Parking Lot, curbing for the new drive is being installed, according to the email. A new concrete walk and path to the Lyman Hall accessible entry will go in this weekend.

Over the summer, SU is working on completing more than 120 campus construction projects. Here are the other construction updates Sala included in his email:

Carnegie Library renovations: Many renovations to Carnegie Library are in progress. This includes the construction of a new single-occupant accessible restroom and the creation of new library staff spaces and a conference room. New attic insulation has been installed, floor tiling on the first floor is being completed and cupola windows are being installed.

Center of Excellence Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) laboratory: Next week construction at the Center of Excellence will begin as a new UAV laboratory is built. The laboratory is a collaboration between the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences and the Center of Excellence. Researchers will use the space to study UAV flight controls and tracking.

DellPlain, Haven and Flint Hall renovations: Improvements to student rooms and restrooms are currently underway. This includes updating paint and carpet, making improvements to team rooms at Flint Hall, the creation of single-occupant accessible restrooms at Haven Hall and the conversion of multi-user showers into individual accessible shower units at DellPlain Hall.

Flanagan Gym roof replacement: Replacement of the Flanagan Gym roof has begun this week and is scheduled to be complete in early August.

Grant Auditorium ADA improvements: This project, which is currently ongoing, will improve the accessibility of the auditorium by replacing the existing teaching station and adding accessible seating areas.

HBC elevator replacement: Work on the new elevator installation inside Huntington Beard Crouse Hall is progressing well, Sala said in the email. The hole for the new hydraulic cylinder has been drilled, elevator track rails are being installed and all components and materials are on site. The elevator will provide service and access to Gifford Auditorium.

Link Hall accessible entry: Construction on the new accessible entry to Link Hall will begin in the next two weeks. This ramped entry will be built at the south entrance of the building near the College Place bus stop.

Quad improvement project: Tent tie-downs are being put in over the next two weeks, the irrigation system installation is halfway done and power and data pathways for tent locations are being installed.

Sims Hall stair replacement: After the adjacent steam project is finished, work will begin on the replacement of the Sims Hall exterior stairs. This work will start on the north side of the building and then move to the east side. Installation of granite treads will go into the fall semester, with no more than one entry closed at any point, which will maintain accessible entry during working hours.

Slutzker Center improvements: Minor renovations are wrapping up at the Slutzker Center for International Services. These improvements included restroom accessibility upgrades, interior paint and carpet and exterior painting.

Steam line replacement at Waverly and Comstock: The work at the intersection of Waverly and Comstock avenues continues to progress well, Sala said in the email. New steam vault walls have been poured. In addition, another vault has been demolished and will be replaced with a concrete anchor. Exaction across Comstock is halfway complete.

The first of five information sessions on the summer construction projects was held on June 15. The next session is schedule for this Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in Lyman Auditorium.
