Syracuse’s Tiana Mangakahia is one of 10 finalists for the 2018 Nancy Lieberman Award which recognizes the top point guard in NCAA Division I women’s basketball. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association present the award at the end of the season.
Mangakahia leads the country in assists (221) and assists per game (10.0). She also leads Syracuse (17-5, 5-4 Atlantic Coast) in points per game (17.6) and steals (54). Mangakahia has tallied the most double-doubles in the ACC this season with 10. She ranks 18th nationally in double-doubles, 17th in free throws made (109), and 26th in free-throw percentage (86.5 percent).
In a season full of highlights, Mangakahia had her most memorable game against Georgia Tech on Jan. 4 when she scored 44 points and made 20-of-21 shots at the free-throw line. On Jan. 18 at Miami, Mangkahia needed one more rebound to record the first points-rebounds-assists triple-double in program history.
Mangakahia currently stands just 10 assists shy of breaking Alexis Peterson’s program-record of 231 set in the 2016-17 season.
Last season, SU’s Peterson was a top-5 finalist for the Lieberman Award, which was eventually won by Washington’s Kelsey Plum.
The other nine finalists to join Mangakahia are Kia Nurse (Connecticut), Lexie Brown (Duke), AJ Alix (Florida State), Katelynn Flaherty (Michigan), Kelsey Mitchell (Ohio State), Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon), Jessica Kovatch (St. Francis (PA)), Brooke McCarty (Texas) and Jordin Canada (UCLA).
The finalist list gets narrowed to five by early March and the winner is announced during the NCAA Women’s Final Four on Friday, March 30.
