After Syracuse’s 14-12 loss to No. 1 Boston College last Saturday, head coach Gary Gait commended his team’s effort but only said SU played “OK.”

“We’re looking to become a power-four team that competes for championships,” Gait said on Feb. 16.

After a overtime win over No. 5 Northwestern on Sunday, Syracuse (3-1, 0-1 Atlantic Coast) moved up three spots in this week’s Inside Lacrosse poll to rise to the No. 4 team in the nation. The Orange also defeated Coastal Carolina last Monday by 13 goals.

Following a 15-1 first half draw differential and a plethora of goals from newcomers, the Orange entered Sunday’s matchup against the Wildcats looking for their first ranked win. Emily Hawryschuk scored three first half goals but a 12-9 second half lead was followed up by a five-goal run by NU.

Down 14-12, SU rattled off two unanswered goals including a Megan Carney drive from midfield with under 30 seconds left. In overtime, the Wildcats turned the ball over on their first possession and Hawryschuk scored the game-winner after a Mary Rahal ground ball.

In the ACC, Boston College remains at No. 1 and North Carolina drops one spot to No. 3. The Orange are 23 points away from the No. 3 slot. Syracuse’s opponent on Wednesday, Loyola, dropped to No. 12 in the rankings. The two will play at 4 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
