SA elects 12 members to assembly
A record number of applicants ran for various Student Association positions at a meeting that lasted over four hours Monday night. Student representatives were elected to fill the following positions: recorder, finance board members, chair of the board of elections and membership, university senators, and assembly representatives.
Two students ran for the position of parliamentarian, but neither received a two-thirds majority vote, leaving the position vacant.
Josh Shaw, a junior finance and entrepreneurship major, was elected to one of the three open spots on the Finance Board, which delegates funding to student organizations.
Matthew Alexander, an undeclared sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences, Janice Tomlinson, a freshman biology major, Kaitlyn Eberle, a senior in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, Amanda Jiang, a senior political science and international relations major, Angelo Coker, a junior hospitality major, and Tricia Kwakye, a junior in Arts and Sciences were all elected as assembly representatives.
Tim Wilke, a junior in the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, was elected as an assembly representative for ESF.
Jonathan Yueng, a junior in Arts and Sciences and Eugene Herring, a senior international relations and economics major, were both elected to University Senate.
Nya Wilson, a senior in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, was re-elected to her position as Chair of the Board of Elections and Membership.
Will Evans, a sophomore in Whitman, was elected as SA’s recorder.
Before the grueling elections process began, SA Comptroller Lily Mei went over a list of funds recently delegated to student organizations: What the Health Magazine, 20 Watts magazine, the Muslim Student Association, Hillel, Phi Beta Sigma and Kalabash Dance Troupe all received funds. The Finance Board still has $17,432.88 to give to student organizations for special programming.
A group of assembly members met with Remembrance Scholars last week to continue discussing a student response to the release of convicted Pan Am Flight 103 bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi. SA and the Remembrance Scholars will team up to author a bill that will express their feelings on the issue in an educational and thoughtful way, said John Barnhart, chair of the Student Engagement Committee. On Sept. 22, SA will hold a candlelight vigil on the steps of Hendricks Chapel to remember those who lost their lives in the bombing.
