Common Council’s president wants police to address traffic issues near SU during football games

During Monday’s Common Council study session, President Helen Hudson said she wants the Syracuse Police Department to work with Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety during home football games to address traffic issues in the area near Thornden Park and Euclid Avenue.

“When it’s game time, you can’t get anything down those streets, and (DPS) needs to understand that you can’t block residents from being able to get up and down their streets,” Hudson said.

Greg Loh, director of city initiatives, said his office regularly meets with the Syracuse police chief, deputy police chief and DPS officials, and that he would bring up the issue in their discussions.

Councilor Susan Boyle, of the 3rd district, asked if police and DPS could put barriers up near Thornden Park.

Amanda Harrington, an assistant corporation counsel, said the Thornden Park Association is working with the city’s parks department to figure out a solution for home football games.



The common council also delayed a vote on a proposal to build affordable housing units on the city’s Westside neighborhood.

The ordinance would authorize a tax exemption agreement with Star Park Housing Development Fund Corporation to construct 50 affordable housing units at 135 State Fair Blvd. Councilor at-large Tim Rudd asked the council on Monday to hold the proposal until a site drawing or construction plan for the units is completed.

Other business

The Council passed the following proposals:

  • Appropriating $15,000 of the 2018-19 budget to fund the CNY Political Leadership Institute and Nourishing Tomorrow’s Leaders programs.
  • Authorizing the use of a code enforcement officer to perform housing inspections for people who participate in the Tenant Rental Agreement program.
  • Approving a contract with Pro-Act, Inc. to supply and administer flu shots for up to 350 city personnel.
  • Permitting a local property owner to build stairs and a bike rack that would encroach into the Comstock Place and Comstock Avenue rights of way.
