Frank Howard will return for his senior season as the Orange's starting point guard.

Syracuse will open the season ranked No. 16 in the AP college basketball poll. The Orange is one of seven Atlantic Coast Conference teams ranked in the top-25.

Kansas opens the season as the No. 1 team in the country, followed by Kentucky. The other ACC representatives are No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Virginia, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 15 Virginia Tech, No. 17 Florida State and No. 22 Clemson. The ACC’s seven ranked teams are the highest number of ranked teams from a single conference.

The Orange could also play another currently ranked team on its schedule: No. 14 Oregon. The Ducks play on the other side of the 2K Classic bracket at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 15 and Nov. 16. If SU and Oregon both won or both lost their first-round meetings — against Connecticut and Iowa, respectively — they’d play the following day.

There are four other ACC teams that received votes but weren’t ranked: Notre Dame, Louisville, Miami and North Carolina State.

Syracuse opens its exhibition slate on Thursday in a meeting with the College of St. Rose. The regular season begins on Nov. 6 for SU, as Eastern Washington comes to the Carrier Dome for a 7 p.m. tip.
