On the 68th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, take time to remember
As Americans, it is easy to feel safe and withdrawn from the troubles of the world, but when war is brought to your back yard, it is hard to forget.
‘Never forget Pearl Harbor.’ The slogan that became popular shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941 holds many feelings for different people. We should never forget those individuals who were injured or died, they are people like you and I who were not expecting to be attacked that day. The U.S. had never been attacked like that before; it was completely unexpected.
Our young generation felt similar feelings after the attacks on Sept 11, 2001, and as Americans we vowed to never forget 9/11. America made that same promise with Pearl Harbor. There were so many hurt. Our nation likes to feel that we are invincible but we are all human, weak and frail when compared to the weapons that our world’s militaries use.
Many of us cadets joined the military because we can’t forget what happened and don’t want those individuals who died to be forgotten. We take steps daily that remind us of whom we are and why we do what we do. The military is not for everyone and there are many ways to ensure that these people and their history are not forgotten.
Take some time out of your day and learn about or remember those individuals who were affected by the attack on Pearl Harbor. Continue to remember who we are as Americans, and the freedoms that we are able to enjoy, because of our nation’s strong resolve. Show respect to those individuals who lived through the attack and the aftermath. ‘Never forget Pearl Harbor.’
