Brown reinstated at Syracuse following M-Street arrest

Syracuse junior football player Eugene Brown has been reinstated to the university, his lawyer Gary Sommer said. A Daily Orange reporter also saw Brown walking with a backpack on the quad on Tuesday. Sommer said Brown was reinstated late last week.

Brown was suspended indefinitely from the university after his March 27 arrest on Marshall Street. Brown was also suspended from the football team by head coach Greg Robinson until further notice.

Sommer refused comment on why Brown was reinstated or what process led to his return to SU. University policy mandates that any person charged with a violent crime is placed on interim suspension by the university.

The person can then appeal that suspension to SU Judicial Affairs within 30 days. Sommer wouldn’t say if an appeal led to Brown’s reinstatement.

‘Eugene was reinstated and is being allowed to attend classes with certain conditions,’ Sommer said in a statement to The Daily Orange. ‘He’s still subject to the university judicial process once his criminal charges are resolved. I would like to commend Judicial Affairs for looking at all the facts and allowing Eugene to resume his classes.’

Sommer wouldn’t comment on Brown’s conditions for attending class. It’s his policy not to comment on pending cases.

Brown was arrested following an altercation on Marshall Street with two Virginia residents who were in Syracuse for the NCAA Regional held at the Carrier Dome. He was charged with second-degree assault – a felony – resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and second-degree harassment.

Sommer wouldn’t say whether a reduction in charges resulted in Brown’s reinstatement. Robinson could not be reached for comment and its unknown if Brown is back with the football team.
