Letter to the Editor : Recognizing Taiwan as county inappropriate
The article on the first page talked about financial aid available to international students at Syracuse University. There is a picture showing the ‘countries’ from which most international students come, and Taiwan is among them. I think now that Taiwan is not officially recognized as a nation by the U.S. government or the United Nations, it’s not appropriate to be called a country in this newspaper, because most international readers are Chinese from the mainland. People may have different opinions about whether or not Taiwan should be considered a nation, but isn’t it more appropriate to use the phrase ‘countries and districts?’
