Students are rushing to clean their rooms, restaurants and hotels have been booked for months and the Carrier Dome will likely see one of the season’s largest crowds.

It’s Family Weekend.

Syracuse University’s annual Family Weekend will begin Friday, Oct. 5, and run through Sunday, Oct. 7.

More than 4,000 people and 1,300 families will attend the event this year. Families are expected to come from 37 states and three foreign countries: Canada, Great Britain and Switzerland, according to an Oct. 2 SU News release.

This year’s event is centered on Friday night’s football game in the Carrier Dome, in which SU will take on the University of Pittsburgh at 7 p.m., according to the Family Weekend guide.

Family Weekend began at SU in 1953 and first fell under the jurisdiction of the Parents Office in 1972, according to the release.

Families must register for the weekend and pay a fee of $40 per family. There is an online registration process, which will be open until 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. Late registration may be done in person on Friday and Saturday at the Parents Place Hospitality Suite at 304 Schine Student Center, according to the Family Weekend guide.

Families can go to the Panasci Lounge in Schine on Friday and Saturday to obtain information regarding the weekend’s events as part of a hospitality suite hosted by the Parents Office, according to the release.

The weekend features several information events, including sessions on university housing, the Department of Public Safety, judicial violations, student involvement, fraternity and sorority affairs and breakfasts hosted by the deans of each college, according to the Family Weekend guide.

Additionally, the university has planned recreational events for families such as a cappella concerts, a production of “Merrily We Roll Along” put on by the SU Drama Department, a hypnotist show and concerts put on by students in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, according to the Family Weekend guide.

There will be sporting events in addition to football, including women’s volleyball games, a men’s soccer game and women’s ice hockey games, according to the Family Weekend guide.
