Triche signs with Bobcats for Summer League

Brandon Triche, one of two undrafted free agents from Syracuse hoping for a shot in the NBA, signed with the Charlotte Bobcats to play with their summer league team, Triche’s brother, Mike, confirmed in a text message to The Daily Orange.

The former SU guard’s father, Melvin Triche said that the agreement for Triche to play with the Bobcats was finalized within 10 minutes of the end of Thursday night’s Draft.

Melvin said Triche sent him a text message that said “I’m with Charlotte” minutes after the Draft. He also said the Bobcats had been in contact with Triche’s agent from the Billy Duffy Agency since Triche became a client. Charlotte did not have a second round pick, but did have a spot in mind for Triche, Melvin said.

Triche worked out with about a dozen teams in hopes of finding his way into the second round of the Draft, now he’ll have to prove himself in the NBA’s Summer League. Charlotte is one of 22 teams that fields a team for the Las Vegas season that runs from July 12-22.

Every team that Triche worked out for — the Nets, Pistons, Kings, Trailblazers, Knicks, Lakers, Clippers, Mavericks, Suns, Magic and Celtics — called about Triche playing for them in the Summer League Friday, but Triche’s agent thought the Bobcats gave him the best chance of making a team, Melvin said.

Melvin also said that recovering from a back bruise Triche suffered against Pittsburgh Feb. 2 greatly helped his workout performances.

Triche started every game in his career for the Orange and averaged 13.6 points per game last season. The guard joins a Bobcats team that was the worst in the NBA last season and drafted only one player during Thursday’s NBA Draft, former Indiana big man Cody Zeller.

Said Melvin, about Michael Jordan, the Bobcats Chairman, taking interest in his son, “That feels good.”
