Whigham returns to Syracuse after lung contusion, possible scar tissue damage

Syracuse cornerback Julian Whigham is back in Syracuse where SU team physicians will continue to monitor his health, SU Athletics announced in a release Monday night. The release said Whigham suffered a lung contusion and possible tearing of scar tissue from a prior surgical history for achalasia.

Whigham collided with Florida State wide receiver Rashad Greene and teammate Jeremi Wilkes in the end zone near the end of the first quarter of Syracuse’s 59-3 loss to No. 2 FSU on Saturday. Medical officials helped him off the field on a stretcher.

He was immediately placed in an ambulance and taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where his mother and sister watched over him, The Post-Standard reported on Sunday.

Whigham’s status for the remainder of the 2013 football season “will be evaluated,” according to the report. Syracuse (5-5, 3-3 Atlantic Coast) needs to win one of its final two games against Pittsburgh (5-5, 2-4) or Boston College (6-4, 3-3) to become bowl eligible for the second consecutive season.
